3 Springtime Roof Maintenance Tips for Homeowners

With springtime right around the corner, many homeowners are making their spring cleaning checklists, adding important maintenance tasks that they weren’t able to get to during the winter. At the very top of that list should be roofing maintenance. You see, winter can be very hard on your roof, which is why you need to give it a bit of TLC once the weather starts to warm up again. To help you on this mission, here are three roof maintenance tips from Diamond Roofing Specialists, Inc.

1. Perform a Basic Inspection

The first thing you should do is perform a basic inspection of your roof. While this doesn’t necessarily mean that you should climb on your roof, what you can do is a ground-level check of your gutters, eaves and other areas that are visible from the ground. If you see anything out of place, be sure to call in your trusted local roofer.

2. Clean Your Gutters

Leaves, twigs and other organic debris tend to accumulate in your gutters during the winter. And, as we all know, clogged and gunky gutters are next to useless so you’ll want to spend some time giving yours a good cleaning. If you’re not up for the task, there are some roofing companies that specialize in professional gutter cleaning.

3. Check for Algae Growth

Despite what some people might think, algae on your roof is more than just an aesthetic problem. Algae actually feed on the limestone found in asphalt shingles which weakens your roof’s structural integrity. Damage caused by algae may also weaken your roof’s ability to reflect sunlight. Washing your roof at least once a year is recommended to keep algae growth under control.
