Common Roofing Issues in Winter

Winter weather can wear your roof down and cause problems like snow and ice buildup, leaks, mold growth and structural damage. In this post, Diamond Roofing Specialists, Inc., one of the top roofers in the area, discusses some of the most common roofing issues during the cold season.

Ice Dams

An ice dam is basically an accumulation of ice and water on the roof and under the shingles. When warmer water or melted ice flows down your roof and reaches a colder area, it refreezes and forms a dam. Moreover, when water gets backed up behind the ice dam, it tends to seep into the cracks in your home’s exterior. When left unchecked, this can lead to structural damage and mold growth.

A few things that you can do to prevent ice dams are installing a proper attic ventilation system, increasing roof insulation and removing snow with a rake or broom.

Icicles

Icicles are often formed during sunny days with sub-freezing temperatures, and they can pose danger to people and pets. Their excessive weight can also cause damage to your roof and gutters, so experts recommend cleaning your gutters in fall. Clogging, due to a buildup of leaves and debris, usually contributes to the formation of icicles.

Flashing Leaks

Leaks in the flashing are usually due to poor installation or extreme weather events. Professional roofers suggest inspecting the flashings every six months to ensure that they’re in good condition. Don’t forget to carry out roof repair as needed.

Condensation

Condensation problems are generally caused by inadequate attic insulation. If not addressed immediately, these can result in mold and mildew growth as well as damage to your home’s interior. Additionally, condensation can also encourage ice dams and shorten the service life of your roof. The best way to prevent condensation is by keeping your attic properly ventilated.
