How the Ventilation on Your Roof Works

Not many homeowners really think about the ventilation in their roofs. To some, allowing flow to air freely may even seem counterintuitive especially since we are constantly told that maintaining an airtight home is important to improve energy efficiency. The science behind it, however, is very sound and, in today’s post, your friends over at Diamond Roofing Specialists, Inc. explain how it works.

How Roofing Ventilation Works

Roof or attic ventilation works on the principle that warm air naturally rises while cool air sinks to the bottom. This is why there are two types of vents that can be found around your home: intake vents which are located at the lowest part of your roof, and exhaust vents located at the peak of the roof.

Intake vents allow cool air to enter your attic while exhaust vents allow hot air to escape. This promotes proper airflow which is beneficial to your entire roofing system. Contrary to what some homeowners think, your attic is more than just a space to stow away unused stuff around your home. In actuality, your attic helps keep your entire home at an ideal temperature while also extending your roof’s service life.

How Proper Ventilation Protects Your Home

Your attic prevents your roof from overheating during the summer and getting too dry during the winter. It may not seem like a huge deal since your roof is constantly exposed to the elements anyway but it is actually quite important. An overheated roof during summer can cause your shingles to crack and fail prematurely. Also, hot air that condenses in your attic due to a lack of proper ventilation can also promote mold and mildew growth that can wreak havoc on the structural components of your home.
