Your roof makes up approximately 40% of your home’s exterior, so picking a good color is critical if you want your home to look appealing. But aside from looks, the color of your roof also plays a part in keeping your energy bills low. Whether you’re building a new home from scratch or replacing the roof of your existing home, here are three things you should consider before deciding on a roof color.
1. Climate
As mentioned above, the color of your roof has a direct impact on how much you’re paying your power company. Dark-colored roofs absorb heat, while light-colored roofs help keep homes cool. If you live in a hot environment, we don’t recommend that you get dark shingles as dark roofs can make your attic a lot hotter. This heat can transfer to your living spaces. Conversely, if you live in a cold climate, dark roofs can provide lower heating costs compared to buildings with white or light-colored roofs.
2. Other Exterior Colors
While you may want your home to stand out from the rest on the block, you probably don’t want it standing out for the wrong reasons. Well, this is exactly what will happen if your new roof color clashes with your siding and trim colors. As a general rule of thumb, you’ll want to match a warm color with other warm colors. The same goes for cool colors. For instance, a rusty red roof works well with beige or light brown siding.
3. Environment
Aside from the colors of the rest of your house, you should also consider the colors surrounding your property as this helps in setting a general tone. Blue roofs blend nicely when a home is situated near water making them a great choice for beach houses, while an earthy red roof works well in wooded areas.
