Roofing 101: What Are Asphalt Roofing Granules?

Asphalt roofing shingles are among the most popular roofing materials in the United States today, and for good reason. They are economical and are relatively easy to install. Although they are not as long-lasting as other roofing materials, asphalt shingles still have a service life of 20 years or more. But what makes asphalt shingles so durable? A local roof repair company explains in today’s article.

What Are Asphalt Shingles Made Of?

The asphalt shingle manufacturing process uses a thin fiberglass mat that is bound together using stable resins and binders. Asphalt, which is the main water-resistant component, is then placed on top. This roofing asphalt is oxidized by blowing air through the hot asphalt, thereby increasing its viscosity. It is quite similar to road asphalt, only roofing asphalt is processed to a higher degree of toughness for increased performance.

Protective Granules

Hard rock with certain physical properties ideal for roofing is crushed and then screened to exact size specifications. Think of it as the tiny bits of rock found in sandpaper. In fact, the granules found in asphalt roof shingles are sometimes referred to as grit.

The granules are then processed into a wide variety of colors via ceramic firing. This special method gives them long-lasting colors. Extra granules are added during manufacturing to provide asphalt shingles with additional features. For example, copper granules are added to make the roofing material more resistant to algae. Special granules with reflective properties help in reflecting some of the sun’s heat and keeping home interiors cool and comfortable.
