Telltale Signs Your Roof Needs to Be Replaced

A routine inspection can help determine what next steps to take when it comes to your roof. But depending on what the roofers find, they may suggest getting a full replacement instead of repairs. Even if you see that your roof looks relatively intact, there may still be hidden damage that’s slowly compromising its structural integrity. To help you decide if you need a new roof, Diamond Roofing Specialists, Inc. shares some of the telltale signs:

Shingle Granule Loss

If you recently had a shingle roof replacement, it’s normal to notice granules in your gutters and the areas around your roof. This loss will usually last for a few months depending on the amount of rainfall you get, but it’s a different story if your roof is around 10 to 15 years old or more. This is because granules will still fall off slowly due to wear and tear, so after several years, they can leave parts of your roof more exposed to the natural elements. Granule loss from a roof is normally a sign that a full roof replacement is needed soon. But this can also happen to newer roofs that are experiencing premature granule loss due to manufacturing defects. If this is the case, you can still have the roof replaced if it’s under warranty.

Curling Shingles

Curled shingles can happen in two ways, which are cupping and clawing. Cupping happens when the edges of the shingles turn upward while clawing happens when the edges stay flat and the middle starts to come up. While different kinds of roof damage can be addressed with extensive repairs, if yours has curling shingles in several areas, it will most likely need a full replacement. This is because your roofing system is already highly susceptible to weather damage and other natural elements.

If the curled shingles in your roofing system are only affecting a minor part of the roof, it can still be professionally repaired. However, it won’t be as effective in keeping out the elements as before. You’re better off having your roof fully replaced as soon as possible because the shingles are already vulnerable to weather damage and other natural elements.

Old and Damaged Shingles

Your roof’s age can also determine when you need a full replacement. Modern shingles are made for durability, yet different circumstances such as the weather can affect natural wear and tear over time. And as your shingles naturally deteriorate over time, their effectiveness will decrease. If your roof is already over 20 years old, extensive repairs can become costly, so you’re better off with a full replacement. It’s also better to get it done sooner than later. Even if you have about three to five years left to replace your whole roof, its waning performance may already be affected, especially if it was recently exposed to extreme weather.
