Most parts of a standard roofing system are repairable. However, the roof deck is not among them. In today’s post, local roofing company Diamond Roofing Specialists, Inc. discusses why roof decks are not repairable, and what your roofers will do in case it gets damaged.
The roof deck, also known as decking or sheathing, is placed between the roof framing (rafters and trusses) and the waterproofing components (underlayment and outer roofing). It provides a flat substrate where the outer roofing components are fastened to and a surface for roofers to work on during installation. The attic-facing side also provides a surface for insulation like cellulose or expanding foam. A well-maintained roof deck can be used for a second installation.
The good thing about roof decks is it’s not as exposed to damage, given the layers of material installed on it on one or both sides. In fact, the whole point of having underlayment in a roofing is to prevent moisture from getting on the roof deck in case the outer roofing material is punctured. Nevertheless, roof decks can still be damaged by the following causes:
Severe impact damage — This can be caused by a fallen tree or similarly large object, usually during a storm.
Moisture infiltration — This can happen if moisture penetrates the outer roof and the moisture barriers. Infiltration is caused by one or more factors that include puncture roofing, installation errors, or low quality roofing materials. Moisture infiltration is indicated by water stains, clumping insulation, and mold in the attic.
Trapped moisture in the attic — Poor attic ventilation and high indoor humidity can result in trapped moisture in the attic and result in moisture damage to the roof deck.
Damaged roof decks are not repairable because they’re essentially large boards. Repairs would make as much sense as trying to fix individual shingles. Replacing them with new boards would involve removing everything else that’s on them, including asphalt shingles. However, it is possible to partially replace roof decks depending on the extent of the damage, and whether your roofer will be able to source the rest of the materials. As a homeowner, your best defense against damage to the roof deck is taking the preventative route by investing in a quality roofing system.
